This is the Third Edition of this remarkable reference work. GOLD COINS OF THE WORLD is the only book of its kind ever published. a book unique and standing by itself in the annals of numismatic literature, having no counterpart in either scope or subject matter.
The valuations of the coins have been completely revised and brought up to date from the previous edition of this book. In addition, many new coins have been added, pictured and priced. Extensive revisions have been made in the coin listings for Great Britain and Brazil and, for collectors of modern world coins, a new section has been added which is devoted exclusively to recent issues.
Gold coins have excited mankind since about 700B.C., when the first coins containing gold were struck. Since then they have been passionately collected by men in all walks of life, yet never has there been a more universal desire for these coins than during the present generation.
Up to the time of the printing of GOLD COINS OF THE WORLD, information about the many thousands of gold coins in existence could not be had without consulting multitudes of obsolete, rare and out-of-print reference works printed in many different languages.
GOLD COINS OF THE WORLD has thus long been needed by the world-by numismatists, by bankers, by economists, by historians, by libraries, by institutions of learning or by students of gold in general.
For GOLD COINS OF THE WORLD is an illustrated catalogue in one volume of every gold coin struck in the world since about 600 A.D.- the approximate time when the coinage of antiquity ended.
The coins have been simply and concisely described by type, and the denominations and dates of the type have been listed, together with a numismatic valuation.
There are more than 2800 illustrations embodied within the text, more than have ever appeared in any coin book of comparable size.
The Appendix too is of great value, containing tables full of vital information, much of it long needed by the world in the compact form here presented.
It took Robert Friedberg, the late author and internationally known numismatist, five years of the most painstaking research to gather, and then collate, the information published. He achieved a major numismatic triumph of this generation.
The third edition of the book has been revised, with new information added and valuations brought up to date by Jack Friedberg, who worked closely with his late brother in publishing the original work.
A group of contributors has assisted the author in order to attain the maximum accuracy needed for so important a work as this. These contributors are internationally known numismatists, and are acknowledged experts in their own fields.
GOLD COINS OF THE WORLD is a definitive and original work of commanding stature and well worth the attention of any one interested in gold, gold coins or numismatics in general.
