Arnold Luschin von Ebengreuth conducted a comprehensive study of the Friesach Pfennig, a medieval silver coin that was highly significant in the region of Carinthia and beyond.
His work in Numismatische Zeitschrift is divided into several parts spread across volumes 55 (1922) and 56 (1923).
In Volume 55, he presents:
A literature review (“Literatur des Friesacher Münzwesens”), covering previous research on the Friesach minting system.
A chronological ordering of major Friesach coin finds ("die wichtigsten Funde nach ihrem Alter geordnet"), which gives insight into the distribution and dating of different Pfennig types.
In Volume 56, his focus shifts to more technical and structural aspects:
The mint sites and their coin types (“Friesacher Münzstätten und ihre Gepräge”), where he examines differences between various mints in Friesach, and how their coins differ in design or style.
The monetary standard (“Der Münzfuß der Friesacher Pfennige”), analyzing the weight, silver content, and economic value of these Pfennige.
The study was illustrated with many plates (Tafeln), evidencing different coin types and iconographies.
Luschin’s contribution is foundational: by combining numismatic typology, finds evidence, and monetary analysis, he significantly advanced the understanding of the Friesach Pfennig and its minting history.
