Abstract

The numismatic collection of the State Hermitage includes a large number of medals and jettons related to horse-breeding. The present article studies a group of such items connected with the history of the Moscow and Saint Petersburg Societies for the encouragement of breeding trotting horses. Medals and jettons commemorate the anniversaries of the societies or served as prizes for race winners. Many of them are made of precious metals and are of a high artistic quality. Particularly remarkable are personal jettons which belonged to the Crown Prince Nikolai Aleksandrovich (the future Emperor Nicholas II) and the stud owner N(ikolai?) Telegin. Using the archives and literary sources, the author traces the circumstances under which some of the pieces were created and details of the history of races where the jettons from the Hermitage collection were given as prizes.
