Comments

This coin was popularly called “bosqueras” (woodsmen) because they were cut down to remove their gold in the forests near Valencia. It was seized by other territories despite a royal prohibition. Faced with the need to mint new gold coins, the Valencian coat of arms of a lower fineness was adopted in 1544. The small shield with a rampant lion that appears at the bottom of the obverse is the mark of the master assayer Alfonso Sánchez Dalmau, who produced them. It can be seen that for the first time, the lettering ceased to be Gothic.
