The national football team of Curaçao, better known by the nickname ‘The Blue Wave’, has made history. For the first time in the country's history, and as the smallest country ever to do so, the team has qualified for the 2025 FIFA World Cup. To celebrate this, the Royal Dutch Mint, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Curaçao, is releasing a special commemorative coin: the Curaçao 5 Guilder ‘The Blue Wave’ in Silver Prooflike.
It had been hoped for for generations, and on November 18, 2025, the moment finally arrived: The Blue Wave qualified for the FIFA World Cup, led by experienced national coach Dick Advocaat. In the weeks leading up to the historic qualification, Curaçao slowly transformed into a vast blue sea: streets, houses, and cars turned blue. Now, eyes are set on the FIFA World Cup from June 11 to July 19, 2026, where the tournament kicks off for Curaçao on June 14 against Germany.
