Each medal was issued annually from 2009 to 2020. The obverse features a colourful image of the animal of the year and the mint mark on a matte background. Different minting technologies were used throughout the series: colour application, laser interference technology and latent image technique. The reverse is common to all medals in the series and depicts the full twelve-year cycle of the Chinese lunar calendar.
