Empress Sissi Monument

The commissioning of a statue of Queen Elizabeth was proposed as early as 1898, after the Empress's death, and it was inaugurated three years later, on June 16, 1901. The bust of the empress was placed on the alley leading up to the Citadel. Pákej Lajos, a Cluj architect, designed the statue's pedestal, and the bronze bust itself was created by the famous Hungarian artist Strobl Alajos. The inscription on the statue read "Queen Elizabeth 1898" and was engraved on the pedestal. The bust was removed in 1919, after World War I. The pedestal, which has classicist features, is still in its original place today, undeservedly abandoned and overgrown with vegetation.
