Ferdinand VI, known as "the Prudent" or "the Just," ascended to the Spanish throne on July 9, 1746, following the death of his father, Philip V, and was proclaimed king in Madrid on August 10 of the same year. His reign (1746-1759) was marked by a period of peace, international neutrality, internal development, and the promotion of the arts under the influence of his wife, Barbara of Braganza.
