On 1 May 2004, the largest enlargement in the history of the European Union (the "fifth wave") took place, when 10 new countries, mainly from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, joined the EU. This event, known as the "eastern enlargement", increased the number of EU members from 15 to 25 and marked the real reunification of Europe.
Participating countries (10): Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus and Malta.
