Comments
The Assembly of the Clergy is the ecclesiastical institution of Ancien Régime France. It enjoys the protection of the King, independence from Rome, and fiscal immunity (formulated at the Lateran Councils III and IV - 1179 and 1215). There were two types of assemblies: the smaller ones, known as "Assemblées des Comptes", which brought together thirty-two deputies (two from each province); and the larger assemblies (sixty-four deputies), designed to resolve religious issues (relations with Rome, Protestants, Jansenism, etc.). The last assembly was held in 1788.
