Comments

In November 698, Irmina, granddaughter of King Dagobert and abbess of a convent in Trier donated Willibrord, an Anglo-Saxon monk born in Northumbria (north of present-day England), of his property in Echternach.

Willibrord founded an abbey where he rested after his expeditions to Friesland, Denmark and Thuringia. Died in 739, the tomb of Willibrord quickly became a place of pilgrimage.

Echternach Abbey gained importance, notably by the notoriety of its scriptorium (workshop in which monks realize facsimiles) which had very productive periods in the 8th and 11th centuries. Among them is the Echternach Gospel (Codex Aureus Epternacensis) preserved in Nuremberg and the Codex of Spire (Codex Aureus Escorialensis) preserved in Madrid.

To this day, Echternach, of Gallo-Roman origin, located about thirty kilometers from the city of Luxembourg, has nearly 5,000 inhabitants and is best known for its dance procession that attracts every Monday of Pentecost thousands of participants and spectators.
