The medal was issued by the local crafts association in Landau (“Landauer Handwerk”) as a commemorative item for the 700th anniversary of the city’s charter. The reverse side of the medal is a deliberate replica of a famous medieval coin: a Gros tournois, originally introduced by the French King Louis IX (the Saint) in 1266. The choice of this coin as a model stems from the fact that Landau received its town charter in 1274, a time when the “tournois” was the most important and stable silver coin in Europe and served as a sort of standard currency.
