Comments

Chiloe Island is located off the coast of Chile. In 1558 Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, the Spanish governor of Chile, began an expedition which resulted in Chiloe being claimed by Spain. In 1567 the Spanish established the City of Castro as part of their campaign to pacify the inhabitants and control the island. Though Chile declared independence from Spain in 1818, Chiloe held out as one of the last Spanish strongholds in South America. It had two failed attempts at independence before being formally incorporated into the Chilean Republic in 1826.
