Obverse

At the centre, an image of Saint Francis of Assisi inspired by a 14th-century fresco by Simone Martini located in the Basilica of Saint Francis, Assisi (Umbria, Italy). Around, the inscription "SAN FRANCESCO D'ASSISI 1226-2026", the year of the Saint's death and the year of the coin's issue, respectively. At the bottom right, "RI acronym for the Italian Republic. On the left "R", identifying the Mint of Rome, and at the bottom left "AV", the designer's signature. Arc-shaped, the twelve stars of the European Union.
