These medals were issued for academic excellence by the Natal University College, which later became the University of Natal. This was one of the founding institutions of what is now the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Medals of this design were issued over several years. Although they include no date, the reverse inscription that is unique to each medal usually does. The earliest inscription date on https://www.southafricanmedals.com/ is 1928. The latest seen so far is 1935.
Laidlaw reports that the medal is sometimes found within a green presentation case marked, "HENRY WADE / WATCHMAKERS & JEWELLER / 205 CHURCH ST / MARIRZBURG / NATAL / MADE IN ENGLAND," on the inside of the lid.
