In 1609 the Knights of Malta, under Grandmaster Alof De Wignacourt noticed a large number of fake foreign coins circulating on the islands. A Decree was issued and all these coins were to be brought at the Castellania building in Valletta for general assay. All coins found to be fake and underweight were withdrawn from circulation whilst those genuine were countermarked with the coat of arms of the grandmaster in a shield. Another feature of this exerciseis the test cut, which was made to test the silver. This is usually seen on the reverse of the coins aswell. Due to the many seized Turkish ships, there is a vast array of host coins carrying these countermarks. 4 Grand Masters are known to have countermarked these coins to date.
