Barbarossa Cave, with a total area of approximately 13,000 m², is the largest anhydrite-gypsum cave in Europe developed and secured for tourism. Around 200,000 years old, it is a rare Wimmelburg-type cave with endogenous layers. The cave's bedrock consists of sediments formed approximately 250 million years ago (Zechstein). It was discovered by chance in December 1865 when miners entered large natural cavities in search of copper slate.
