From 1830 to the present day, four generations of medal artists have signed their works with the Penin name. This Provencal family of Flemish origin engraved enough medals to illustrate Lyon's political, religious and economic history.
Ludovic Penin (1830-1868) decided to publish the medals he had engraved. More than his father, he composed numerous religious medals, and the quality of his work earned him the title of "Pontifical Engraver" granted in 1864 by the Pontifical Brief.
