Obverse

Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon.

Reverse

Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; monogram to inner left and ear of wheat in the exergue.

Script: Greek

Lettering:
ΚΑΛΧΑ
ΔΟΝΙΩΝ

Mint

Calchedon, Bithynia, modern-day Kadıköy, Turkey

Comments

Unique issue where Lysimachus’ name is replaced with the legend ΚΑΛΧΑΔΟΝΙΩΝ, inscribed vertically on either side of the reverse.

As such this legend proclaims that the coins belong “to the Chalcedonians,” acknowledging that this emission is not a royal issue but a civic one.
