This medal was released as part of a collaboration between the Hungarian National Bank, the Hungarian Mint, and the Royal Dutch Mint. Its purpose was to commemorate the referendum held in Hungary on April 12, 2003, where the public voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining the EU. Hungary officially joined the European Union on May 1, 2004.
It was minted by the Hungarian Mint, but is included in the Netherlands Information set Hungary 2003 .
