Friedrich III suffered from laryngeal cancer and at the point of his accession to the throne he was already unable to speak. He died only 99 days after his accession of the throne as King of Prussia and Kaiser of the German Empire. The phrase “Lerne leiden ohne zu klagen” (Learn to suffer without complaining) was attributed to him by the German people after his death.
