Revision boards were instituted on August 29, 1805. In each département, a conseil de révision was set up, comprising the prefect, representatives of the conseil général and the conseil d'arrondissement, and a general or senior officer. The council visited the various cantons. It was assisted by a member of the intendance, the recruitment commander and a medical officer. For each canton, a recruitment list was drawn up, showing conscripts who were fit for service, those who had volunteered, those who had been exempted and those who had been deferred. From this list, the recruitment commander drew up the matriculation registers.
