In late 19th and early 20th century in many houses in Germany wooden planked floors were waxed manually by scrubbing. Wax mixed with oil was used for cleaning wood and making it more durable. The wealthier houses had maids, who were scrubbing floors and were named "Wichsmädel".

The Wichsmädelwerkewere a part of the paint factory Wilhelm Süring KG that produced from 1841 until it's nationalization in 1972.
