This medal is mentioned in a letter addressed to Cardinal Gravelle in 1547. It is said to have been made on the occasion of Charles V's trip to Italy in 1536 (Bernhart p. 30), which is doubtful in view of the emperor's aged portrait. Armand points out that the same reverse with the LEO signature was used for a medal of Pope Paul III.
