Westermark explains that on this coin type the eagle usually carries a hare, but on this particular die the engraver chose a larger hoofed animal. The species can’t be identified with certainty; scholars have suggested everything from a colt to a goat kid, donkey, or small deer. Westermark suggests that a young deer or fawn best matches the size and proportions.
