Comments

The Sukhumi Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy, founded in 1927, was the primary Soviet center for primatology, biomedical research, infectious disease studies, and vaccine development. Located in the subtropical climate of Abkhazia, it housed one of the largest monkey colonies in the USSR.
This medal commemorates the 50th anniversary of the institute (1927–1977). Such anniversary medals were produced in limited quantities for staff, collaborators, and academic events. The recurring use of monkey imagery reflects the institute’s global scientific role as a specialized primate research center.
