Lluís Companys i Jover (Tarrós, June 21, 1882 – Barcelona, October 15, 1940) was a Spanish politician and lawyer, of Catalan nationalist and republican ideology, leader of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, Minister of the Navy of Spain in 1933 and President of the Generalitat of Catalonia from 1934 to 1940. Exiled after the Civil War, he was captured in France by the Gestapo, at the request of the Francoist police, and transferred to Spain, where he was tortured, subjected to a court-martial and finally shot at Montjuic Castle.
