Commemorative issue

Ronald Reagan's 1984 Re-election as 40th President of the United States

Obverse

The obverse features a high-relief, bust of Ronald W. Reagan, presented front-facing in formal attire and centered against a reflective silver field. The inscription encircles the portrait, with the date positioned to the left and the series mark to the right. The design emphasizes Reagan’s presidential stature while blending patriotic symbolism with the polished aesthetics typical of private commemorative medals.

Reverse

The reverse depicts a vertically mirrored, double-headed eagle rendered in high-relief, grasping an olive branch at its center—an emblematic nod to both vigilance and peace. This composite eagle motif, though not derived from official U.S. heraldry, symbolically conveys continuity of leadership and strength of governance. Surrounding the device is the legend in raised serif lettering, anchored by a denticled border that imparts classical formality to the composition.

Comments

Struck in 1986, this private-issue commemorative medal honors the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Wilson Reagan, whose leadership during the 1980s was marked by Cold War diplomacy, economic reform, and cultural influence. The “Double Eagle” title is a symbolic nod to U.S. coinage history, but this medal is not an actual coin nor associated with the U.S. Mint. Its name derives from the legendary $20 gold piece and is used here to suggest patriotic grandeur.

Issued by the National Historic Mint, a private numismatic distributor active in the 1980s and 1990s, this piece was one of a large series of limited-edition commemoratives celebrating presidents, military achievements, and other American themes. It was widely marketed through direct mail campaigns and Sunday newspaper inserts.
