This bronze piece is an example of proto-coinage associated with the Upper Xiajiadian culture (ca. 1000–600 BC), which flourished across southeastern Inner Mongolia, northern Hebei, and western Liaoning. These artifacts are often considered relatives of the so-called bead money of early Zhou China.
Although their precise function remains uncertain, these objects likely served as trade valuables or pre-monetary exchange items rather than ritual objects.
