Comments

In August 1808, the Supreme Junta of Mallorca approved the design of an octagonal 8-real coin presented by Tomás Cuscheri. The proclamation stated: “The Supreme Governing Junta of this Kingdom has resolved to inform the public that, given the extreme shortage of coins being experienced on this Island, it has ordered the minting of silver coins, and the minting of the peso duro, which is reduced to an octagon, is being carried out, bearing the coat of arms of the city on one side, and on the other the following letters: 30-S-1808, …. Royal Castle of Palma, August 17, 1808.” Since the name of Ferdinand VII was omitted from the new coin, whether by oversight or for self-interest, the Crown reacted, as expected, and on September 9, the Junta ordered that all octagonal duros without the king's name be presented to be stamped with the design FER. VII on their obverse. Naturally, not all the issued pieces could be recovered, leaving a few copies without the royal legend.
