Comments

King Carol I of Romania had died before Romania entered World War I, on October 10, 1914. Because he had no heir, his nephew, Ferdinand I, ascended the throne of Romania.

Even though Ferdinand came from the Hohenzollern family, like the German Emperor, Wilhelm II, he decided that his country would enter the war on the side of the Entente, and so, Romania entered World War I on August 27, 1916 on the side of the Entente. Thanks to this, he earned the nickname Loyal, because he had respected his oath to the Romanian parliament in 1914: I will rule like a good Romanian.

After World War I, the Romanians' efforts were rewarded, first of all by the fact that the country was completed with Bessarabia, Bukovina and Transylvania along with Banat. Thus, Ferdinand became the ruler of the largest Romanian state up to that time, the so-called Greater Romania. On October 15, 1922, in a sumptuous ceremony, Ferdinand I was crowned king of Romania, in Alba Iulia.
