Comments

During November 1913 Sandows Cocoa & Chocolate Co. Ltd deposited £40,000 in ordinary shares with trustees to be distributed as prizes in a widely publicized advertising promotion. An additional £6000 in cash was also deposited with the same trustees, the Capital Share and General Guarantee Co. Ltd... The competition for the first £20,000 worth of shares commenced immediately, the second £20,000 reserved for a future competition. From November 1913 to the end of the competition every packet or tin of Sandows Cocoa contained an aluminium "coin" to the value of the package purchased i.e. 3d, 4.1/2d, 7.1/2d, 1/3d. The tokens bear the name of the maker Wright & Sons, Edgeware, Middlesex, and feature on the obverse the bust of Eugene Sandow with the value on the reverse within a wreath. The wrappers from packets of Sandows chocolate also counted at their face value. The idea was to collect as many of the tokens and wrappers as possible and to send them off by the 31st March 1914. The prizes were given for the highest total values sent in and were as follows: 1st Prize £500 worth of shares; 2nd "£150"; 3rd "£100"; 20 Prizes "£50"; "£40"; "£25". There were to be similar competitions with closing dates on the 30th June, 30th September, and 30th December 1914, with a bumper prize-giving on the 30th April 1915
