Comments

Judd 23a is believed to be a privately-made restrike using dies discarded by the United States Mint. Because Joseph J. Mickely owned a lot of such dies, this and other pieces have been associated with him. Considerable die rust (in the form of raised blobs of metal) appear in the fields and around the legends and devices. Judd 23a is unique and currently owned by super-collector Bob Simpson. The pedigree of this piece begins around the turn of the 20th century, when the Chapman Brothers appear to have been the first owners. It's premiere appearance at auction was in 1956, then the final auction appearance in 1991. For several years, the coin was owned by Mike Byers, from whom the coin was purchased by Legend Numismatics (via John Albanese), then sold to Simpson. Many collectors are not even aware of this piece and the image above is the first opportunity to get an up-close look at this unique coin.

Note: unrelated to Judd 23, which is a copper United States-issued trial strike of the Draped Bust $5 coin.
