Series: Proto Boar

Obverse

Boar right, bristly back, tail not curly, usually solid right legs (nearest viewer), bifurcated left legs, no spear in shoulder. Rings with multiple pellets around, one with three pellets inside.

Reverse

Horse left, dashes for mane (sometimes with pellets on the ends), fern tail. Large pelletal sun (anemone, solar rosette, pellet-in-ring inside ring of pellets) above. Rings with multiple pellets around, one with three pellets inside.

Comments

Van Arsdell Classification: Corieltauvian B, Uninscribed Silver Coinages, Hosidius Type. VA 855 - 05: Vestiges of S-shape below boar. Ring-in-pellet motifs in front of and below horse. Above the horse is a large ring of pellets containing a ring with three pellets inside. This is Rich Type 9a.

Rich Type 9, ‘Three-Pellet Proto Boar’, intermediate period. No Type 9 sub-types are die linked:
Rich Type 9a (VA 855-05): 1 on CCI (1 obverse, 1 reverse die). Ringed pellet triad above boar and below head (connected to head by pole); other ringed double pellets (three) above; ringed single pellet below tail. Pelletal sun above horse has pellet triad inside; two pellets in ring in front of and below horse; small anti-clockwise spiral behind horse; ladder of pelleted bars as exergual line.
Rich Type 9b: 6 on CCI (2 obverse, 2 reverse dies). Pellet rosette, small anti-clockwise spiral and two pellets in ring above boar; ringed pellet triad below head (connected to head by pole); pellet in ring below tail; wedges in field. Pelletal sun above horse has pellet triad inside; anti-clockwise spiral in front; two pellets in ring below; exergual line of vertical dashes.
Rich Type 9c: 1 on CCI (1 obverse, 1 reverse die). Pellet ring above boar, ringed double pellet below, ringed pellet triad in front (not connected to head). Pelletal sun above horse has pellet triad inside; two pellets in ring below; horse has pinhead mane and a belt; wedges in field below tail. Found at Kirmington, Lincolnshire, 1994. Chris Rudd List 140, 5 May 2015, lot 26.
Rich Type 9d: 1 on CCI (1 obverse, 1 reverse die). Large ringed double pellet within pellet ring above boar, ringed pellet triad in front, small anti-clockwise spiral behind. Ringed pellet triad below horse, ringed double pellet in front, pelletal sun above has one pellet inside; ladder of vertical dashes with pellet ends below.
Rich Type 9e: 2 on CCI (1 obverse, 2 reverse dies). Both boar's forelegs bifurcated (and W-shaped); nothing above boar, ringed double pellet behind, ringed pellet in front, ringed pellet triad between legs, large pellet-and-ring motif below. Pelletal sun above horse is two rings of pellets around single pellet; ringed pellet triad below horse, ringed double pellet below tail; small anti-clockwise spiral behind horse or above head. Chris Rudd List 196, 12 August 2024, lot 19.
Rich Type 9f: 1 on CCI (1 obverse, 1 reverse die). Degraded boar of Type 9b. Pelletal sun above horse has one pellet inside; Ringed pellet triad below horse, small anti-clockwise spiral behind.

The intermediate period horse always has a fern tail.
