Security Edge
By the end of 1945, using silver for the full, half, and quarter rupees was no longer feasible, leading to a shift to nickel for all future issues. Nickel half and quarter rupees were produced in large quantities in 1946 and 1947 at the Bombay mint, while only pattern specimens of the 1946 full rupee were struck there. It is possible that the 1945 nickel rupee was a trial piece made to test the presses before producing the 1946/1947 coins.
