This Fine Gold Proof 5 Cent NCLT Coin was issued by the RAM as part of a six coin set to commemorate the Change of Monarch. The set contains six coins, five of them (5c, 10c, 20c, 50c & $1) with different effigies of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The $2 coin in the set has the first effigy of King Charles III on its obverse.
This 5 cent coin displays the 1st effigy by Mary Gillick as used on the first Australian coins (1953-1964) to be minted with Queen Elizabeth II.
According to centuries-old tradition, Australia's coins bear an effigy of the reigning monarch on their obverse. Queen Elizabeth II was Australia's longest-serving monarch. Although new effigies are introduced rarely, there have been six effigies of the Queen on Australia's coins prior to her death.
Mary Gillick (1953-1964), Arnold Machin (1966-1984), Raphael Makleouf (1985-1998), Vladimir Gottwald (2000, 1 coin only), Ian Rank-Broadly (1998-2019) and Jody Clark (2019-2024).
