This unique coin is attributed to the Mon Kingdom of Sudhammapura (Thaton), which began minting its own currency in the 6th century due to increased trade, paralleling the coinage of its trading partner, Hamsavati. While Hamsavati featured a Sankh shell on its coins, Thaton opted for the Wheel of Law (chakra) on the obverse. Both kingdoms thrived on silver trade, and their coins have predominantly been recorded in silver. However, this particular gold Unit may represent a contemporaneous strike, potentially intended as a special donative issue, and could still have been considered valid currency in the 6th century, as its weight aligns with that of late Pala/Samatata Dinars from the 7th century and earlier Gupta or imitative Kushan issues from Bengal. The coin has a hole and shows evidence of water damage.
