novum castellum
Translation: 1011. New castle.
Engraver: Fabio Bagnato
Designers: Yvan Gogniat, Jean-Pierre Plancherel
Lettering: 2011
Translation: Abstract representation of the sun's rays, the movement of water and seagulls swirling in the sky.
Designer: Manon Pierrehumbert
The motifs on both sides were created by students at the Ecole d'arts appliqués in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Under the guidance of Jacques Rais, the students drew up two projects. The first, for the historical side, had to integrate three imposed symbols, chosen by Jean-Pierre Plancherel, in a hamornous way. For the second, the young artists had to come up with a composition of three elements that gave their personal vision of the city of Neuchâtel today. They then modelled the second side in plaster. A jury of professionals chose the best project for each side, namely Yvan Gogniat's design for the obverse and Manon Pierrehumbert's for the reverse.
"Novum Castellum" literally means "New castle", referring to the first name of the city of Neuchâtel in the Latin texts (first trace in 1011 A. D. J. -C.)
