Comments

On April 18, 1980, when the new independent republic of Zimbabwe was born from the former British colony of Rhodesia, the Rhodesian dollar was eliminated by the Zimbabwean dollar, with exchange parity (1 old Rhodesian dollar equaled 1 Zimbabwean dollar).
Since the introduction of the land reforms in the early 1990s, hyperinflation and the collapse of the national economy have severely devalued the Zimbabwean dollar.
In 2006, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Gideon Gono, announced that the government had printed 21 trillion Zimbabwean dollars in order to acquire foreign currency to pay off debts owed to the International Monetary Fund.
Since then, many novelty banknotes with even higher, and sometimes imaginary, figures such as "Dumillion", “Zettalilion”, "Quadringentillion", “Myrillion” and “Yottalillion” were put into circulation, but they were worthless and were not printed by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
The banknotes are often gold plated with gold foil and was made in plastic material.
