António Sérgio

António Sérgio de Sousa Júnior (Damão, 3 September 1883 - Lisboa, 24 January 1969) was a Portuguese educator, journalist, sociologist, historian and politician. A democrat who opposed the fascist and authoritarian regime, he was exiled between 1926 and 1933 and imprisoned in 1935, 1948 and 1958. He was Minister of Education in Álvaro Xavier de Castro's government between 1923 and 1924. He saw education as the main route to freedom, critical thinking and the acquisition of values. His pedagogical trends were mainly aimed at changing mentalities and combating the educational system of the National Dictatorship and the Estado Novo. There are two schools named after him: the António Sérgio Primary School in Sintra and the António Sérgio Secondary School in Vila Nova de Gaia.
