Comments

Five coins were struck for Edward H. Metcalf, grandson of influential railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington. Each was struck in platinum with the frozen date of 1827 and were intended for his personal collection.

The platinum off-metal strikes were minted in the 1950s during one of Edward H. Metcalf’s extensive European and South American voyages (Metcalf would usually request mints to strike examples for him, supplying them with the platinum planchets).
