Comments

Banknotes issued due to the coup led by Getulio Vargas on 24th of October, 1930. The State of Rio Grande do Sul, alongside states of Paraiba & Minas Gerais, deposed President Washington Luis and placed Getulio Vargas as president. Rio Grande do Sul was Vargas' homebase and huge supporter of the coup, the banknotes were issued both as potential civil war bonuses/bonds, but also as de facto currency within the state, since the stability of the national treasury would be place in jeoparty in case of a prolonged civil war.

Due to the relatively bloodless and successful coup, these first issue banknotes are very rare today, as one would have to forego the fairly attractive 7,5% annual interest. Thus, most were reclaimed by 1931, when the second print were issued.
