"Facing the new station, the building housing the Café de l'Espérance was acquired in 1869 by Jules Antognoli, who had just arrived in Brussels from Switzerland. He was joined in the early 1880s by his four brothers, Pierre, Camille, Eugène and Ignace. The latter's daughter, Marie (Mary), married the alderman - and future mayor - Fernand Bernier in 1920, who became a member of the hotel's Board of Directors.Together, in successive phases, they transformed the establishment into an imposing hotel, which at the beginning of the 20th century boasted 200 rooms - many of which were used for overnight honeymooners departing from the station platforms - accessible by elevator, a luxury goods boutique, various restaurant and banqueting rooms, and a terrace that was much frequented, particularly by travelers awaiting boarding. It is one of the few establishments in the Quartier du Midi able to compete with the famous names in the city center. But the hotel, like its neighbors, had to contend with the construction of the junction from 1911 onwards, which condemned the beautiful perspective of the Place de la Constitution and the attractiveness of the location of its hotel establishments. The Commune strongly opposed the project, but to no avail. The building was finally destroyed by fire in 1953, and replaced by a block of apartments hardly in keeping with the heritage of the past...".

The "Antignoli" family were merchants in canned food and wine. This family operated a very prestigious hotel in Brussels.
Article Les "Antognoli" by Aimé-François Schepers, ACJM, issue 41 pages 4-8 via https://wikicollection.fr/?product=article-numerique-acjm-les-antognoli-par-aime-francois-schepers
Eugène Antognoli, owner of the Hôtel de l'Espérance at the Gare du Midi, is a perfect illustration of this edifying story: a founding member and commissioner of the Union (NdR: Union syndicale des Hôteliers, Restaurateurs, Limonadiers de Bruxelles) in 1886, he became its treasurer in 1897, before being appointed president on the unexpected death of his predecessor in 1912. His commercial retirement in 1920, followed by his appointment to the honorary presidency in 1927, by no means put an end to his union career, as he continued to sit on various Union delegate bodies (prud'hommes, apprenticeship commission, culinary exhibitions, national and international hotel federations...), without interruption, until his death in 1934: the man thus remained (omni-)present within the Brussels Horeca landscape for almost 50 years!

The fleurdecoin.eu website presents this 55 mm-diameter medal attributed to the Fonson workshop:

Dating the "Antognoli Bruxelles" token:
The allure of this token and the simple mention "Antognoli" indicate that it was probably produced in the era of the "Café de l'Espérance" before the creation of the luxury hotel, i.e. between 1869 and 1920, probably just before the 1st World War.
