Comments

Gupta/Hardaker type #442. Series IV XXXII AI. Nanda Empire c. 345-322 BCE.

It is unknown what the pictograms on karshapana were meant to communicate. Representational punchmarks show an agrarian society but also appear to draw on religious imagery. The Rig Veda contains hymns to the sun god, Surya, and Indra and the storm gods or Maruts, described as bulls. There are also hymns to the healing plants.
