In 1581, the Prince of Parma, governor of the Netherlands, succeeded in taking Cambrai after a long siege. The Duc d'Alençon entered Cambrai on August 17, 1581, and distributed "a good number of triangular gold and silver medals"; the Prince of Parma withdrew to Valenciennes. On August 20, 1581, the Duke of Alençon solemnly received the title of protector of the town in Cambrai cathedral.
