Comments

Local Spanish Civil War banknotes: Created by municipalities, cooperatives, unions and other organizations due to the scarcity of fiduciary currency in small purchases and exchanges during the Spanish Civil War.

Municipality: Vilanova de l'Aguda - Province: Lleida - Autonomous community: Catalonia

In this Municipality there is the curious and exceptional case of putting into circulation an issue of paper money printed by Arts Gràfiques Ilerda originally intended for the City Council of Ponts (Municipality very close) and which this municipality did not use (the reason is unknown).

In this way, the City Council of Vilanova de l'Aguda, in March 1937, took advantage of these notes, which consist of the values of 1 Peseta and 50 Centimos for a total amount of 1500 Pesetas, crossing out the name of Ponts in the title of the notes (and in some cases also in the date line) and writing the name of Vilanova, legalizing them by the seal of the City Council with the lettering “ALCALDIA DE VILANOVA DE L'AGUDA” (Mayoralty of Vilanova de l'Aguda).
