Circular motifs with the number 5 at all four corners. Center left portrait of General Marion. Large center vignette breakfast scene of sweet potatoes roasting in the fire, and shows General Marion, known as the “Swamp Fox,” inviting a British soldier to share breakfast. Right side is another portrait of General Marion, A large bright red pocket FIVE in center bottom.

These bills are part of what are known as obsolete banknotes. Non-refundable, issued without guarantees, sometimes only partially completed, they are typical of this era.  Issued by the State Bank of South Carolina over 156 years ago! The Bank of South Carolina operated from 1812 through 1865 and served as the state treasury for South Carolina.
