Chester, NY- Unknown Issuer at Commercial Bank of Glens Falls 25¢; Nov. 1, 1862
The Commercial Bank of Glens Falls made scrip notes available to its commercial customers so that they had the means of making change for day-to-day business transactions. The merchant or other customer would deposit some amount of dollars with the bank, which would then issue an equivalent amount of scrip notes. As the merchant paid out these scrip notes, the bank stood ready to redeem them across its counter much like denominated checks, thus relieving the merchant of that task. This note is not Proof, but rather remainders or perhaps printer archive pieces that have POCs to prevent unauthorized issue. Pretty notes, with the higher denomination unlisted in Harris.
