This medal is a part of the E.W. Cole's series but was not issued by E.W. Cole or his relations. An initial set of new six tokens was produced in 1984 as a commemorative item for the release of a Cole's handbook of medals and other items. The author George Dean finally released the Handbook in 1988 and the pre-issue subscribers to the Handbook were entitled to purchase the set of tokens in the set.
George then produced a second set of 5 tokens in 1988 numbered D105 Gilt, D107 Silver plated, D108 Bronze , D109 Copper, and D110 Aluminium. They were originally sold only in a set but these sets are starting to be broken up and can be found individually.
D106 is a silver version of the above with only 10 minted
The original E.W. Cole tokens and medals which this one commemorates, were a series of medals offering maxims and proverbs issued by E.W. Cole at his Book Arcade.
The reverse of the issued medal is a new design based on Cole's Palm or Fern Tree design.
