FIFTY SHALOMI
- Issued on February 2, 2002, marking 60 years since the liberation of the Ghetto in Vilnius.
- Ghetto in Vilnius - On September 23, 1943, the ghetto was dismantled and some of its residents were led on a death march to Ponary/Poneriai, a wooded area about 10 km from Vilna. The remaining Jews were executed in firing pits and buried in seven large mass graves. When the Nazis realized that their reign of terror was coming to an end, some 7,000 bodies were removed from the firing pits and burned in order to destroy the evidence of the terrible massacres.
